The rainy season, during the monsoon from June to September, is the best time for ayurveda treatment
According to the ancient traditions of Ayurveda, the best time to undergo these treatments is during the monsoons. The weather is perfect – moist, cool and dust-free, opening up the pores of our skin, making the therapy more effective. The post treatment period is also crucial for the body so the cool salubrious monsoon weather allows you to cool down as your body recuperates in bliss
Importance of Ayurveda in Monsoon
Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine is a system of traditional medicine native to India, which uses a range of treatments, including panchakarma (‘five actions’), yoga, massage, acupuncture and herbal medicine, to encourage health and wellbeing. Ayurveda, which literally means the science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = Science), is an ancient medical science which was developed in India thousands of years ago. It is believed to have been passed on to humans from the Gods themselves. The ancient Vedic literature by sages has clearly laid out instructions to maintain health as well as fighting illness through therapies, massages, herbal medicines, diet control and exercise. Kerala is said to be the land of Ayurveda. Like the other Indian states, the position of Ayurveda in Kerala is not substitution but main stream. As a matter of fact, today Kerala is the only State in India which practices the Rishi medicinal science with utmost commitment.
We are in the month of Monsoon. As per Ayurveda, the Malayalam month of Karkidakam/ Monsoon is considered to be a month when the human body is at its weakest level, being prone to illness and infections. During this period, it is considered that the human body accumulates a high amount of toxins due to aggravated Doshas and is in critical need of detoxification. Hence, this period has long been identified as ideal for preventive treatment and rejuvenation therapy. Individuals who undergo the seasonal Karkitaka Chikilsa (Monsoon Treatment) can consistently maintain their body and mind at the peak performance level.
Karkidakam treatment:
The main aim of this treatment is detoxification and is a prominent part of the Shodhanachikitsa therapy of Ayurveda. The five methods to detoxify, vamanam (The kapha toxins accumulated in the body and the respiratory tract are effectively removed by vamanam), virechanam (It is indicated for diseases caused due to vitiated pitta or in combination with pitta predominance), vasti (It is the specialized Panchakarma procedure to cure Vata (arthritis) related disorders), nasyam(the excess of bodily humors accumulated in the sinus, throat, nose or head is eliminated) and raktamokshanam(is the blood cleansing and purification therapy) are collectively known as Panchakarmam. This method of treatment specifically targets disease-causing elements of the human body and restores the body to equilibrium and health.
Karkidaka kanji also known as ‘Oushadha kanji’, is taken during this period as part of the therapy. It is a potent medicinal porridge made of around 20 special herbs. The kanji is ideal for boosting immunity and the body’s strength and also acts as a very powerful detoxifying agent.
