Munnar

Munnar is one of the most popular hill stations in South India. It is located 1600 Metres above sea level and which is the confluence of three mountain streams – Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. Once it was the summer resort of British government in South India and it is really a breathtakingly beautiful tourist destination in God’s own country.  Unending expanse of tea plantations, valleys and mountains, exotic species of Flora and Fauna are the salient features of Munnar . Among the exotic species of Flora, one of the highlight is the Neelakurinji, which blooms only in every 12 years.  When the flower blooms  it seems the valleys and meadows are all painted in blue.  Munnar also has the highest peak in South India, Anamudi, which towers over 2695 meter above sea level.

Cheeyapara Water falls : This Waterfall is on Kochi – Madurai National Highway,  before reaching Adimali.  The Cheeyappara Waterfall cascades down in seven steps.

Eravikulam National Park (Rajamala) :

Eravikulam National Park  is around 15 kms from Munnar town and it is the natural habitat of the Nilghiri Thar. It is the first and largest national park in kerala. The national park is managed by the Kerala Department of Forest and Wildlife, Munnar. The main motive behind this was to protect the rare Nilgiri Tahr and Hemitragus Hylocrious, which are common here. But now the park is home to numerous protected species of flora and fauna.  Apart from Tahr, other little known animals such as Nilgiri marten, small clawed otter, ruddy mongoose, and dusky striped squirrel are also found. Elephants make seasonal visits.

The national park is divided into three areas – the core area, the buffer area and the tourism area. In which, the Rajamalai is known to be the tourism area of the park.  Private vehicles are not allowed within the park. You can park your vehicle in the parking area and go to the park by common transportation (mini bus) provided by the Authorities. In peak season, there are long queues for getting the entry ticket, So its advisable to reach at least before 830 AM for a comfortable journey to the park. Tickets are issued till 430 PM. The mini-bus takes you on a 30 min. ride up the hills along a scenic view. The bus ride ends at a small photo gallery, a store and has passenger conveniences. From there, visitors are encouraged to take a short trek of around 1 km (25–30 min.) to a vantage point. The trek has splendid views of the nearby hills and lets you observe the steep face of the mountain. Once you are back from the trek, return buses take you to the park entrance.

Mattupetty Dam : located 13 km from Munnar, situated at a height of 1700 meters above sea level and it is a delight for nature lovers. Mattupetty offers many fascinating sights to relish. One of the main attractions in Mattupetty is the beautiful lake, and the Mattupetty Dam, which are ideal picnic spots. The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Idukki provides boating facilities in the Mattupetty Dam. Speed launch, slow speedboat and motorboats are available on hire. Other attraction at Mattupetty is the dairy farm, run by the Indo-Swiss Livestock Project. The dairy farm is a unique one of its kind with several varieties of high-yielding cattle being reared. Public entry restricted.

Echo Point  : It’s around 4 kms after Mattupetty town. This place gets its name from the natural Echo phenomenon. It’s noted for 2 acres of evergreen forest upon a huge rock. The rock is more than 500 acres in area. Echo Point is fully covered with abundant green sceneries which looks like a whole place covered with green blanket.  It is the ideal place for nature walks and trekking.

 Kundala Lake  : The sprawling Kundala tea plantations and Kundala lake are other attractions in the vicinity. It is a picturesque place, around 6 kms after Echo point. There is an artificial dam in Kundala which is the major attraction here. Kashmiri shikkara boats and row boats are available on rent. Horse ride also available.  A Golf Course is located here which belongs to Tata Tea Ltd.

Top station,  the idyllic hill station is located 12 kms after Kundala Lake,  which is the highest point on Munnar – Kodaikanal Road.  Top station offers panoramic views of the neighboring state of Tamilnadu.

Tea MuseumIt is in the town itself, it is  a demo model of the real thing, but it still shows the basic process.  A section of the Tea museum also houses classic bungalow furniture, typewriters, wooden bathtub, magneto phone, iron oven, manual calculators and EPABX of the1909 telephone system.  A 30-minute video explaining the history of Munnar, its tea estates and the programs put in place for its workers screens hourly.

A demonstration room for tea tasting is another attraction where one would come across different varieties of tea. Those eager to understand the nuances of tea processing can do so at the CTC and orthodox tea-manufacturing unit at the museum.

Timings:  0900 to 1600 hrs. The museum is closed on Monday.

Blossom Park ( Hydel Park) : It is located at 3 Km away from Munnar on the way to Cochin (at Old Munnar town). Commencing from Headwork Dam it stretches about 15 acres. Beautiful gardens with rare varieties of plants and flowers, shady trees are amusing. Right place for person wants to spend some leisure time at the lap of serene natural beauty.

 CSI Church : The CSI Christ Church is curdled in history and served a significant role during the British Colonial Era. This splendid church was built of rough hewn granite with un- plastered walls which was constructed by the British in 1910. The decrepit glass windows depicting the saints and Biblical characters lend the church its different charm. It has an amount of assumption plaques in anamnesis of British era tea planters.

 Pothanmedu View pointPothamedu is around 5 Km away from Munnar town, on Cochin direction. Being a very high place, the surrounding places can be seen clearly. When the atmosphere is clear even the Idukki Arch Dam, which is 60 Km away from Munnar, can be seen.
